Taking cognisance of alleged bungling involving government funds in the J-K irrigation and flood control department, the state vigilance commission today directed that a preliminary enquiry be registered in the matter.

SVC has directed its investigation wing, State Vigilance Organization (SVO), to register a preliminary enquiry (PE) into large-scale bungling and misappropriation of government funds allegedly by officials of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department in Kishtwar district, an SVC officer said.

A complaint was lodged by people of Tagood in Bungam Tehsil Mugalmaidan, through Sewa Ram, Sarpanch, Panchayat Halqa Tagood, over alleged misappropriation of government funds, embezzlement and other irregularities by officials of the irrigation and flood control department while undertaking construction work on a 5-km-long canal from Dunwar village to Tagood, he said.

It has been further alleged that sub-standard material was used and "a huge amount" was drawn dishonestly by private contractors in connivance withofficials of the department.

SVC summoned the complainant, who produced documents and made certain assertions before it.

The commission prima facie claimed that the officials of the irrigation and flood control department did not only misuse government funds meant for construction of the canal but also caused a loss to the state exchequer.

SVC, while looking into the allegations, has directed SVO to register a PE in the matter.
