Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj (87) was today unanimously elected as the 16th president of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission.
The office of the president of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission was vacant following the death of Swami Atmasthanandaji Maharaj on June 18.
"Today the board of Ramakrishna Math and the members of the governing body of Ramakrishna Mission unanimously elected Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj as the 16th president of Ramakrishna Math and Mission", Swami Subiranandaji Maharaj told reporters.

The office of the president fell vacant and as the seniormost vice-president, Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj was the natural choice. He was the interim president", he said.
Describing Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj as an "outstanding sanyasi", he said that under his leadership Ramakrishna Math and Mission will march ahead.
He also said, with Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj taking over as the new president, the post of one vice president fell vacant and Swami Shibamayanandaji Maharaj has been given that post.
