A Swedish man faces charges for illegal weapons possession after he built a functional crossbow to apparently protect himself from 'vampires'.

The unidentified man from western Sweden claims that he felt threatened by vampires so much that he built a crossbow at home and had it aimed at the door.

The police were on their way to pick up the man for a trial relating to a breach of knife laws. He has a history of of weapons violations.

However, as they entered his apartment they discovered that a crossbow, with an arrow ready, was pointing straight at the door, 'The Local' reported.

"Today I am going to go out and kill vampires," the man had written on his Facebook page.

The man admitted that he owns two crossbows, one which he had purchased and the other which he had made himself.

The man said that he admits to his crimes if owning a crossbow was indeed illegal.

According to regional newspaper Bohuslanningen he wants the weapons back in case there is no clear law against it.

Police tried out the crossbow to see if it functioned - and lodged an arrow into a wall 22 metres away.
