Sweltering heat grips north India

Sultry weather conditions gripped north India as most parts of the region experienced another hot and humid day today with the mercury maintaining its upward trend.

It was a hot and humid day in Delhi with the maximum temperature touching 43.3 degree Celsius, four notches above normal. The night too was considerably hot as the minimum settled at 32 degree Celsius, four points above normal.

High level of humidity which oscillated between 59 and 33 per cent during the day added to the woes of Delhiites.

At Palam, the maximum temperature was recorded at 44.8 degree Celsius, at Ayanagar observatory it was 44 degrees while at Ridge it settled at 42.8 degree Celsius.
 

Intermittent showers from Thursday to Saturday had given Delhiites respite from the extremely hot and dry conditions which persisted from June 3 to June 9 when temperature hovered around the 45 degrees mark.

In Uttar Pradesh, light to moderate rains occurred in some areas. Other parts of the state, however, reeled under sweltering heat, with Orai recording the state's maximum at 44 degree Celsius.

According to the MeT office in Lucknow, 5-cm rainfall was recorded in Maharajganj, followed by Bansgaon 3-cm, and Rasra, Salempur, Patti, Churk and Sidhooli 1-cm each.

Faizabad, Meerut, Gorakhpur and Jhansi divisions of the state, however, reeled under hot weather conditions with the temperature hovering a few notches above normal.

Heatwave continued to sweep across Punjab and Haryana, with Amritsar sizzling at 44.2 degree Celsius, highest in the two states.

The Union Territory of Chandigarh also experienced sultry weather with a maximum temperature of 40.6 degree Celsius, three notches above normal.

Bhiwani in Haryana too recorded a maximum of 44.2 degree Celsius, followed by Hisar 44, Karnal 43, Narnaul 42 and Ambala 41.6 degree Celsius. Among other areas in Punjab, Ludhiana and Patiala experienced hot weather conditions at 43.5 and 43.3 degree Celsius, respectively.

According to the MeT office in Chandigarh, light to moderate rains or thundershowers may occur at isolated places in Haryana and Punjab in the next two days.
