Car bombs killed at least 16 people, most of them civilians, when they targeted Al-Qaeda and Kurdish fighters today in Syria's northern province of Aleppo, a monitor said.

The first bomb hit a checkpoint manned by fighters from Al-Nusra Front, Al-Qaeda's Syria franchise, killing 12 people, said the head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman.

Most of the dead were civilians but included two Nusra fighters, he said, adding that several people were also wounded.

The second bomb detonated less than 30 kilometres away at a checkpoint held by Kurdish fighters, killing four people, two of them civilians and causing an unspecified number of injuries.
