The Telangana government has undertaken an exercise to re-organise districts and mandals (revenue units) in the state.

The purpose of the exercise is to take administration closer to the people, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said in a meeting with district collectors and other senior officials here today, a release from his office said.

At present, there are 10 districts in the state.

Rao told the officials while there are no hard and fast rules, people's convenience should be the criteria in the exercise, the release said.

Rao asked the officials to complete the exercise after talking to Ministers, MLAs and other public representatives.

Objections would be invited before issuing final notification on districts, it added.

New districts would come into being from Dussehra festival this year, the government had earlier said.

The draft notification will be issued between August 4 and 10 and objections will be taken for about a month.

The new districts should come into being by October 11 (Vijaya Dasami festival), the release added.
