Take efforts to make TN cataract-free state: Governor

Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah today asked the members of medical fraternity, especially those in the field of ppthalmology, to join heads with NGOs and voluntary organisations in making Tamil Nadu a cataract free state.

"It is your dedication and noble profession, that would provide vision and ray of hope to many people who are suffering from preventive visual impairment," Rosaiah said while inaugurating a unique upgraded eye care equipment at the Lotus Eye Hospital, here.

Providing access to adquate eye care, making surgery and treatment of cataract and blindness cost effective was necessary, he said.

Stating that blindness and diseases leading to blindness were seen on rise, he said that India was a signatory to the WHO resolution on Vision 2020, which laid emphasis on the right to sight.
 

Globally cataract was the main cause for blindness and it was no no more an elderly disease, as reports revealed that you have also cataract, which was triggered by external factors, Rosaiah said.
