: The Madras High court bench today directed the Tamil Nadu government to take steps to introduce LLM courses in nine different branches of law in government colleges.

Justices A Selvam and P Kalaiarasan issued the direction on a PIL filed by an advocate N Jeyaram Siddharth.

The petitioner submitted that the government colleges offered Post Graduate degree only in one or two branches of studies. However, Dr Ambedkar Law university had approved LLM courses in more than 10 subjects like business, constitution and Human rights, he said.

The Madurai law college offered LLM (Property law), while Tiruchirapalli and Tirunelveli offered labour and constitutional laws respectively.

The government pleader submitted that the law college here did not have the infrastructure to offer various courses.

The judges then directed the government to provide infrastructure if it was not there.
