Government should take steps such as developing large-scale manufacturing zones with fiscal sops to promote domestic electronics industry, Assocham said today.

While welcoming the directive to give preference to domestic electronic products in government procurement, the industry chamber said it would be in the fitness of things if the electronics industry was given a boost by a comprehensive package so that the country's import dependence is reduced.

In the overall IT package, the electronics industry has remained a missing link along with the computer hardware, it said.

"Large-scale manufacturing zones should be developed with fiscal sops and procedural ease to promote the electronic industry," Assocham President Rana Kapoor told PTI.

A Committee of Secretaries has decided that all Ministries and Departments should identify department-specific, domestically-manufactured electronic products for procurement and notify them within a fortnight, a PMO statement said here today.

All ministries and departments will henceforth have to prefer domestically-manufactured electronic products in government procurement, according to the new directive influenced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make-in-India' initiative.
