Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud was among six militants killed in a US drone attack in the lawless North Waziristan tribal region today, Pakistani media reported.

The CIA-operated spy plane targeted a compound in Danday Darpakhel area of North Waziristan Agency. Mehsud, the head of the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, was among the dead, Dawn quoted intelligence sources as saying.

The compound was "completely destroyed" when two missiles hit it while an important meeting of the Pakistani Taliban was being held there, the report said.

Another key Taliban commander, Abdullah, and Tariq Mehsud, a personal bodyguard of Mehsud, were also killed in the attack, sources said.

There was no official word on the killing of Mehsud. If confirmed, this would be the latest in a string of setbacks for the top leadership of the Taliban and Al Qaeda, who have been repeatedly targeted by the US drones in the tribal belt.
