Taluk office assistant held on graft charge

An assistant in a Taluk supply office here has been arrested for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 6,000 for provision of ration card to two brothers, police said today.

Antonydas, Office Assistant in West Taluk Office, was arrested last night by the vigilance police on a complaint from the brothers -- Selvam and Murugan, DSP Chandramouli said.

When the two went to the office to enquire about the status of their application for a ration card, Antonydas allegedly took Rs 500 from the shirt packet of Murugan and asked them to comeback with Rs 5,500 to get the ration card.
 

On a complaint, the vigilance police laid a trap and arrested the accused while he was receiving Rs 5,500.

Police seized Rs 12,500 cash from Antonydas, who has been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

He was produced before special court judge B Mohan, who remanded him to 15 days judicial custody.
