"A gala event was organised by all units of 'Shakti Vijay Brigade' today and the social events commenced with wreath laying at the War Memorial to honour the martyrs of the battle of Tithwal, followed by hoisting of the national flag," a defence spokesman said here.

Games, cultural events and a colourful display by school children enthralled the audience, the spokesman said, adding, a show by Army dogs earned the loudest applause.

Tug-of-war, shot put and 'Gatka'-- a local martial art-- were among the events, he said.

"The grand celebration this year spanned over ten days, in which several sports and social events were organised," the defence spokesperson said.

During the Indo-Pak war of 1947, the two neighbouring countries fought pitched battles for the control of Tithwal sector, which was finally taken by India on May 23, 1948.
