A tanker containing propane gas overturned today on the National Highway-7 near Partapur village here, two days after an accident of similar type took place on the same route.

The tanker going to Chennai from Mathura overturned this morning after the driver lost control over the vehicle about five km away from the district headquarters here, Kotwali Police Station In-Charge, Shailesh Mishra said.

Following the mishap, gas started to leak from the tanker leading to panic in the area. An alert was sounded in nearby areas and a camp was set up at Bamhodi village to accommodate people evacuated from the vicinity of the site, an official said.

Senior officials immediately rushed to the spot and snapped electricity supply transmitted through 33 and 11 KV power lines in the area while traffic on the Highway was diverted as a precautionary measure.

A rescue team has been called from Jabalpur to empty the tanker so that traffic can be restored by evening. Strict action will be taken against the firm operating the tanker, he said.

A case has been registered in this regard and probe was underway, the District Collector said, adding driver of the tanker, Surendra Pratap Singh (50) sustained injuries in the mishap and was admitted to the district hospital.
