CPI(M) MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami today condemned the alleged police action against fellow legislator Sheikh Abdul Rashid in south Kashmir and urged the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly to initiate proceedings against the erring policemen.
"Not speaking of common man, a legislator has become the victim of the police brutality. There are some elements in the police department that are hell-bent to bring disrepute to the whole police institution. Such elements need to be identified and punished under law," Tarigami said in a statement.
"We may have political difference but this is not the way to treat a legislator like this. This thrashing incident depicts the police hooliganism and is a direct attack on the democracy," he said.
Tarigami urged the Speaker to take strong note of the incident and initiate proceedings against the "erring policemen for such a shameful act".
