Tariq Anwar freed in case of violation of poll code

A district court here today released Union Minister of State for Agriculture Tariq Anwar and three others in a 1999 case of violation of election code.

Judicial Magistrate Deepak Kumar released Anwar, BJP Lok Sabha member Nikhil Chaudhary and two others in a case of violation of model code of conduct in 1999 Lok Sabha elections in Katihar in the absence of sufficient evidence.

Anwar had contested the Parliamentary elections as Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate.

The MOS Agriculture, Chaudhary, Independent candidate Ram Prakash Mahto and BSP nominee Madan Mohan Nishad were present in the court.

Anwar had lost the 1991 Lok Sabha elections to Nikhil Chaudhary of BJP.
 

Another accused and the then Congress candidate Mubarak Hussain died last year.

All of them were booked for putting party flags and posters on telephone and electricity poles in the town during the poll.
