Former chairman of Minority Commission Tarlochan Singh today demanded reservation for Sikhs in Assam so that they can maintain their life comfortably.
They are neither migrants nor considered indigenous enough, he said here.
He said "I have personally visited a dozen villages and found their condition miserable. Recently, Assamese Sikhs has raised their voice for reservation and I myself seconded it."
Notably, the population of Assamese Sikhs is estimated to be 12,000, of whom 7,000 are voters.
Barkola, 125 km east of Guwahati, has a majority of them sharing space with nine indigenous communities, he said.
"At 0.87% of Assam's total population, we are a minority among minorities, but do not figure in schemes for minorities," he said.
