The United Nations agency that governs civil aviation says it is setting up a task force aimed at improving security measures in the wake of the shoot-down of a Malaysia Airlines jet over eastern Ukraine.

Top officials from four international organizations met in Montreal today to discuss risks to civilian aviation in conflict zones.

The head of International Civil Aviation Organisation, the UN agency, says there is a pressing need for information and intelligence that can potentially affect the safety of passengers and crew members.

Raymond Benjamin says states have also been reminded of their responsibilities to address any potential risks to civil aviation in their air space.

The International Air Transport Association, which represents airlines; the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization; and the Airports Council International participated in the meeting.
