A high-level business delegation led by Premier of Tasmania Will Hodgman is scheduled to visit India next week to discuss ways to deepen bilateral economic ties.

The delegation includes Minister for State Growth Matthew Groom, Tasmanian ambassadors and renowned cricketers Ricky Ponting and David Boon, senior government and business leaders from the Tasmanian education, energy, tourism, food and beverage sectors.

Besides the national capital, the team will visit Mumbai, a release said, adding that this visit would give India direct access to this growing region.

"Meetings with the Indian government and business officials will seek to deepen economic links while showcasing what the island state of Tasmania has to offer visitors, students and investors," it said.

The delegation aims to finalise some important business and sporting exchange programmes. Tasmania offers India expertise in areas like agribusiness, aquaculture and renewable energy.

Tasmania is Australia's only island state and is located on the south coast.

Tasmania and India already have strong business ties, with Indian enterprises sourcing goods worth more than 90 million Australian dollar in 2015.
