Private utility Tata Power today said it has installed fire resistant natural ester filled distribution transformers across its licensed area to ensure safe and sustainable supply of electricity.

"Tata Power today introduced natural ester filled transformers across the Mumbai distribution area. The objective of introducing these green and fire safe installations is to ensure safe and sustainable distribution of electricity," a release issued here said.

The natural ester fluids or vegetable oil is made from a carbon neutral renewable resource and is biodegradable, non-toxic and non-hazardous in soil and water.

These fluids also have a high fire point, around 350 degree Celsius, and can eliminate any risk of pool fires in the electrical installation as they are self-extinguishing, the release said.

"In comparison to the conventional mineral oil filled distribution transformers, this fluid provides improved fire safety for the densely populated areas within our service area," Tata Power Executive Director Ashok Sethi said.

Currently, Tata Power caters to over 5 lakh residential, commercial and industrial customers in Mumbai.

"We are committed towards ensuring safety and sustainability. Tata Power will continue to implement further technological innovations for the benefit of its consumers," he added.
