TC to take a call on spectrum sharing shortly: Minister

Press Trust of India New Delhi
Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today said work on spectrum sharing and trading guidelines is on and Telecom Commission will shortly take a call on it.

"The guidelines are in the process ... The Telecom Commission is going to meet shortly and once they take a call ... If they differ with Trai recommendations, it has to go back to Trai. If they don't differ, it's fine," Prasad said here.

Last year, telecom regulator Trai had recommended allowing sharing of all categories of radiowaves held by operators, including those allocated at the old price of Rs 1,658 crore or assigned without auction.

Trai had suggested that all access spectrum in the bands of 800/900/1800/2100/2300/2500 MHz would be sharable provided that both licensees have spectrum in the same band.

Operators are allowed to share passive infrastructure like mobile towers, which has helped them in reducing operational cost but not active infrastructure like spectrum.
