Over 500 tea growers of
Nilgiris Tea Cultivators Association today observed one day fast here seeking implementation of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their produce as directed by Madras High Court in 2012.
The growers were not getting the MSP of Rs.14.50 per kg as fixed by the court in October 2012 with the factories still paying Rs.Six to Rs.Seven per kg, thus accumulating an arrears of Rs.890 crore, which include cost of production, Association President, Manjai Mohan said.
While members of Ooty Bar Association boycotted the court proceedings in support of the growers, nearly 20 associations and unions, including agriculture-related, extended their support to the agitation.
