A school teacher has been arrested from Adajan locality here on charges of abetting the suicide of his 14-year-old student, who ended his life alleging torture, police said today.

"A school teacher was arrested for abetment of suicide of a boy studying in standard nine," Police Inspector (PI) J H Dahiya of Adajan police station here said.

The accused identified as one Arjun Patel was serving as a teacher for Physical Training (PT) in Dadiya Vidyalaya in Surat city. He has been charged under IPC section 305 for abetment of suicide of Harsh Jitu Shah (14), said Dahiya.

Harsh had committed suicide on September 15, by hanging himself with a ceiling fan in his room, Dahiya said.

In his suicide note, Harsh blamed Patel for mentally and physically torturing him, the PI said.

On the basis of the suicide note, police arrested Patel late last night and booked him.

Dahiya further said that it was found during the preliminary investigation that Patel had caught Harsh copying in a school exam, which led him to take this extreme step.

However, Surat police are investigating the case thoroughly on the basis of other circumstantial and medical evidence, said Dahiya.
