A headmaster of a government-run school in Odisha's Kendrapara district was arrested on charge of meting out corporal punishment to a student, police said today.
Akash Mallick, first standard student, was allegedly caned by the accused teacher Alekh Chandra Sethy on July 10 which resulted in his right leg being fractured, police said.
Sethy, headmaster of government-run Naranpur Primary School under Kendrapara Sadar police limits, was arrested yesterday and booked under IPC sections 294, 325 and 506 after the boy's father lodged an FIR with the police, Kendrapara Sadar Police station Inspector, Sarat Chandra Patra said.
The accused teacher had found the boy loitering around the school verandah. In a fit of rage, he beat him up for skipping class, he said, adding that the child had to be hospitalised.
Kendrapara district headquarters officials said it would take 45 days for healing of the fracture injury.
Block Education Officer, Prasant Kumar Mohanty said, "There was departmental inquiry into the said incident. As there was veracity in the allegation, the accused teacher has been placed under suspension. Teachers have been asked not to subject children to corporal punishment."
The state has prohibited corporal punishment in both government and private-run schools.
