Police rescued Mukherjee from the mob and took him to Suri hospital in a highly critical condition. As his condition did not improve till the evening, he was shifted to a private hospital in Durgapur, the police said.

A complaint was lodged by his family members with Suri police station but no one was arrested till this evening.

President of the school managing committee Sanjit Roy said an incident happened before the summer vacation and he was beaten up in connection with that.

School officials on condition of anonymity said Mukherjee, who is popular among students, had punished a boy of class VIII before the summer vacation.

His guardians had complained to the authorities that the offence was negligible and the boy was tortured by senior students at the instigation of Mukherjee.

It had been decided that the matter would be discussed as soon as possible after reopening of the school, the officials said.

However, suddenly a large number of outsiders came to the school today and started beating him up and the school officials failed to rescue him, they said.
