A day after the alleged abduction and gangrape of a school teacher here caused an uproar, police today arrested a person and said that the allegation was "false".

Police, which swung into action following protests staged on the national Highway and a dharna led by local BJP MLA Arun Kumar, arrested the lover of the woman, Amit Rathore, sources said.

During questioning of Rathore in the presence of the woman, it was revealed that both were in a relationship but as they belonged to different castes, the woman's family was not in favour of their marriage, said DIG, Bareilly Ashutosh Kumar.

CCTV footage and mobile phone locations did not corroborate the woman's version of her abduction, the DIG said, adding that she had apparently "cooked up" the story as someone had recorded an "objectionable" video of the two and she feared that it would be shown to her family members.

The mother of the woman had lodged an FIR yesterday against three persons alleging that her daughter was abducted, forcibly taken to a sugarcane field in a car and gangraped by the trio while the act was also being videographed by the accused.

In an immediate attempt at damage control, Inspector of CB Ganj police station Rajesh Singh was suspended by IG (Bareily zone) Vijay Singh Meena.
