This sparked a chain reaction with such unsuccessful students in at least two other schools demonstrating outside their institutions demanding that they be declared successful.
14 students who had failed their class 12 pre-board examinations demonstrated outside the Jagatpur Rukmini Vidyamandir at Behala demanding that they be declared as successful.
The students allegedly tried to assault teachers with bamboo staves, before the police intervened.
Protests were also organised by 19 unsuccessful students of the class 10 pre-board examinations at the Anandasundari Girls School at Baguihati in North Kolkata.
The trouble at the Rishi Aurobindo Balika Vidyalaya at Sontoshpur in south Kolkata began around 3:00 pm yesterday with 29 students gheraoing the headmistress Srimati Ghosh and several other teachers demanding that they be given pass marks and allowed to sit for the board exams, police sources said.
The students claimed they had been unfairly marked. Parents of some of the failed students also joined the gherao.
