A city-bound Air India flight from Newark, carrying around 300 passengers, which was diverted to Istanbul due to technical issues, landed here after a delay of over five hours.

The flight AI144 from Newark Airport in the US landed here at around 2200 hours as against the scheduled time of 1640 hours.

Sources said technical glitches forced the diversion of the aircraft to Istanbul in the morning. The aircraft was inspected and after the engineers found it airworthy, it resumed flight to Mumbai, they added.

The plane was carrying around 300 passengers.

"EWR-BOM diverted to #Istanbul due technical reasons. The #flight departed from #Istanbul at 1005 hrs local time," Air India had tweeted earlier in the day.
