A 16-year-old boy has been charged with assault and a hate crime in the mob beating of a motorist who accidentally struck a Detroit boy who stepped in front of his truck.

The black teen is charged as a juvenile. Four others have been arrested in the beating of 54-year-old Steve Utash, but it's the first ethnic intimidation charge in the case. Utash is white.

Prosecutors announced the charges today. The 16-year-old will appear Saturday in juvenile court.

Assault and assault with intent to murder charges also were announced today against 19-year-old Latrez Cummings, the third adult arrested in the case.

Utash is still hospitalised. He was attacked April 2 after stopping to help the 10-year-boy he struck.

A prayer service is planned for today night at a Detroit church.
