A 19-year-old student of NRI Institute of Medical Sciences (NRIIMS), who had jumped off his college building earlier this week in apparent suicide bid, succumbed to his injuries at a city hospital today, police said.

The victim, G Prasanth, a student of FY.BSc (Nursing) in NRIIMS, run by Anil Neerukonda Educational Society at Sangivalasa area in the district, who had attempted suicideby jumping from the fourth floor of his college building on November 17, died during treatment at private hospital here, Inspector of Police, Bheemili, T Appala Naidu said.

Prasanth, a native of T R Valasa under Parvathipuram region of Vizianagaram district, had suffered multiple fractures in legs, hands and head and was in coma.

After Prasanth's death, his parents and relatives staged a protest in front of the hospital and various students groups demanded action against the NRIIMS management alleging that he committed suicide as he was allegedly ragged by his seniors in the college.

Police said though they had initially registered a case under section 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of IPC, it has now been changed to section 174 of CrPC (suspicious death).

Prasanth's body was handed over to his parents after the post mortem, he added.

Further investigation into the case is on.
