A senior revenue official has been attached by authorities in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district for misleading the administration about whereabouts of a man who was washed away by flash floods.

Deputy Commissioner, Poonch, Mohammad Aijaz Asad ordered attachment of Tehsildar Surankote and withholding of his salary for misleading the administration about the man's whereabouts, for leaving station without prior permission and dereliction of duties, a spokesperson of the district administration said today.

He said the officer concerned has been directed to report in the office of assistant commissioner revenue, Poonch, with immediate effect while Naib Tehsildar Surankote was given the charge of his post.

Quoting an order issued yesterday, the spokesperson said after receiving reports of drowning of a person in the Suran river, the officer was directed to reach the spot to

oordinate the rescue operation.

Despite assuring the administration of reaching the spot within half an hour, he was nowhere on the spot after lapse of many hours resulting in the delay in rescue operation and retrieving of the body, he said.

He said the order mentions that such a behaviour is unbecoming of a government official, especially when human lives are at stake.

The matter has been viewed very seriously keeping in view the public sensitivity involved in the matter, the spokesperson said, reiterating the commitment of the district administration in quickest action wherever required and no tolerance for dereliction of duty and lackadaisical approach by government officials.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson said the deputy commissioner released immediate relief assistance of Rs 1 lakh in favour of the next of kin of the man who drowned due to flash floods.

Anzar Ahmed, a resident of Fazlabad, died after he was washed away in flash floods in the Suran river yesterday. His body was retrieved by coordinated efforts of the civil and police administration with active support of the military personnel.
