The Telangana government today set up a committee to study the issue of setting up an integrated steel plant in Khammam district.
"The district (Khammam) is well-suited to establish the plant," a government order (GO) issued today said.
The establishment of a plant in Telangana was one of the issues mentioned in the Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation Act.
The GO listed the geographical advantages of the region - availability of iron ore in neighbouring Chattisgarh and coal deposits under the state-run Singareni Collieries - for establishing the plant.
"The Telangana government wishes to examine if Singareni Collieries Company Ltd and Telangana State Mineral Development Corporation Ltd will come forward to jointly set up the plant," the GO said.
Expressing support for the plant, Congress leader P Sudhakar Reddy and other leaders took out a rally at Bayyaram in Mahabubabad district, a press release from the party said today.
One lakh postcards would be sent to prime minister Narendra Modi and Telangana chief minister Chandrasekhar Rao in support of the demand as per the 'assurance given in the AP Re-organisation Act," it said.
