The Telangana government today enhanced the financial benefit under its 'Kalyana Lakshmi/ Shaadi Mubarak' scheme from Rs 75,116 to Rs 1,00,116.
"I am happily announcing that the amount given through the Kalyana Lakshmi/Shaadi Mubarak scheme in the marriage of girl child will be enhanced from Rs 75,116 to Rs 1,00,116," Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said in a statement in the Assembly.
The state government provides financial assistance for marriage of girls belonging to poor families under the 'Kalyana Lakshmi/Shaadi Mubarak' scheme. It was introduced on October 2, 2014.
"Initially, this scheme was started as 'Kalyana Lakshmi' for SCs and STs and 'Shaadi Mubarak' for the minority community by giving Rs 51,000 in marriage of girl child," Rao said.
It was subsequently extended to all sections of society following requests from people.

The benefit amount was increased to Rs 75,116 last year and as many as 3,60,000 people benefited under the scheme till now, he said.
The scheme achieved certain other societal goals like preventing child marriages, he said.
With a view to get assistance under the scheme, parents of girls are now waiting for their daughters to attain the age of 18 to perform marriage, the chief minister said.
