The Telangana government would appoint "person incharges" in place of village Sarpanchs whose term comes to an end on August 1.

A team of senior officials led by state Chief Secretary SK Joshi, briefing Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, made it clear that there is no alternative except appointing "person incharges" in place of the village Sarpanchs, a release from the CMO said here today.

Though there are demands that outgoing Sarpanchs be appointed as "person incharges", it cannot be done as per law, the officials told Rao, it said.

The officers briefed Rao about the exercise and the reasons for appointing officers as "person incharges," it said.

With 4,383 new Gram Panchayats coming into existence from August 2 (as per a law made by the state assembly), the number of Gram Panchayats in Telangana has increased to 12,751, according to a separate release.

Talking about new Gram Panchayats coming into existence, Rao said the occasion should be taken as an opportunity to develop the villages tremendously.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the state cabinet would be held on July 27.
