Srinagar recorded the lowest night temperature of the season as the minimum temperature at most places in Kashmir division dropped below freezing point, MET officers said today.

The minimum temperature recorded in the summper capital of Jammu and Kashmir was minus 1 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal during this part of the season, making it the coldest night so far, a spokesman of the Meteorological department said.

The city witnessed its first sub-zero minimum temperature of the season yesterday when the minimum plummeted to minus 0.2 degrees Celsius.

The drop in the night temperature was attributed to the continued dry spell in the valley.

There was very scant rainfall over the past two months as a result of which the days remain warmer while the night temperature continued to be on declining trend.

The spokesman said Leh in frontier region of Ladakh was the coldest recorded place in the state with a low of Minus 7.5 degrees Celsius.

The famous hill resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a minimum of minus 4.6 degrees Celsius yesterday, making it the coldest place in the valley, he said.
