Slide in temperature across Odisha gave some respite to the people in most parts today, while the state government directed the districts to remain vigilant and ensure zero casualty due to heat.

While the mercury dropped considerably in most parts of the state apparently under the influence of a nor'wester and hailstorm, Sundargarh turned out to be the hottest place recording 42 degree Celsius, the MeT office said.

The coal belt of Angul and Talcher recorded 41.1 degree C and 40.8 degree C respectively, followed by 40 degree C in Malkangiri, it said adding that the mercury fell below the 40 degree mark elsewhere in the state.

As moderate heat wave conditions were experienced in interior Odisha for over a week, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) P K Mohapatra issued letters to the district collectors asking them to remain vigilant over the situation.

The district collectors were asked to pursue implementation of various measures to alleviate sufferings of the people like supply of safe drinking water, reschedule timing of educational institutions, work hour for labourers, and arrangements in treating heat-stress patients in government hospitals.
