Temperature in the national capital breached the 45 degrees Celsius mark today, making it the hottest day this season, as people scorched under an intense heat wave with the mercury expected to go up further tomorrow.
The Palam observatory registered a scorching 47.2 degree Celsius, the hottest not just for this season but also in the last 19 years.
According to MeT department, the mercury touched the 45 degrees mark at Safdarjung observatory, considered to be the official reading for the city, a day after maximum temperature was recorded at 44.7 degree Celsius here, which was the highest of this season till yesterday.
"Before this, the day temperature (at Palam) was recorded at 47.4 degree Celsius in 1995 here," said a MeT official. The temperature here on the previous day was 46.6 degree Celsius.
The maximum temperature at Aaya Nagar in South East Delhi was recorded at 46.6 degrees while it was 44.8 degrees in the ridge areas.
Hot and dry winds continued to lash the city throughout the day giving a tough time to all those who stepped out. Tomorrow could be even hotter as maximum temperature may touch 46 degree Celsius while the minimum is expected to remain around 30 degree Celsius, Met officials said.
There seems to be no respite for Delhiites from the scorching heat in the next couple of days as the weatherman has predicted that the day temperature may continue to hover around 45 degree Celsius and the minimum around 30 degree Celsius till June 10.
Even night was quite warm in the city as the minimum temperature for the day settled at 29.4 degree Celsius, which was a notch above normal.
Humidity levels oscillated between 30 and 46 degrees during the day.
Weatherman has predicted a mainly clear sky tomorrow with maximum temperature expected to remain around 46 degrees Celsius while the minimum is expected to be around 30 degree Celsius.
