Temple in Khajuraho hit by lightning; 12-yr-old girl dies

A minor girl was severely injured and a part of an ancient temple in the UNESCO heritage site Khajuraho temple complex suffered a minor damage in lightning strike today.

The girl later succumbed to the injuries.

The lightning struck a site between the western group of temples and Kandariya Shree Mahadeva temples around 3 PM, causing minor damage to Jagdamba temple, Archeological Survey of India's conservation assistant Rahul Tiwari told PTI.

This was a very unfortunate incident, he said, adding that temple domes are fitted with lightning conductors.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Ravindra Chouksey said that Shivangi Sharma, the deceased girl, was visiting the temple complex with her family.
 

Dr Amit Agrawal of district hospital said Shivangi was first admitted to a hospital in Khajuraho, and later to the district hospital but the doctors could not save her.

Narendra Sharma, a tourist guide, said this was the first time that the lightning had hit the temple complex which dates back to the 10th century AD.
