Thane police have registered a case of extortion against ten persons for blackmailing and threatening a Bhaynder-based TV actor.

While the incident took place on July 13, a case of extortion under section 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered last night. No arrested have been made so far, police said.

According to the complainant Rajesh Sharma (57), he had lent Rs 10,000 to a woman, an acquaintance, and was asking her for some time to pay it back.

On July 13, he was invited to a flat on some pretext, where an unidentified woman accosted him. Three men then barged into the room, identifying themselves as officers of 'special branch' of Thane police and accused Sharma of running a brothel.

If he wanted to avoid arrest, he must pay them Rs 2 lakh, they said. They also threatened to bump him off in a fake encounter.

Sharma paid them Rs 1.5 lakh out of fear, but later approached the police. Investigation in this connection is underway.
