Ten students of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) were suspended today from academic programme for varying period of time in connection with an incident last week when some hostel students had "prevented" wardens from discharging their duty.

The ten students have also been suspended from the varsity hostel.

These students were asked to depose before a committee set up to inquire into the incident that occurred in a mens' hostel on the campus on November 3 night.

According to the varsity, a surprise check by wardens to weed out unauthorised people led to heckling of the officials including physical threats and that the wardens could be moved out of the hostel premises with the help of police.

"The Enquiry Committee has held students guilty on the charges of unauthorised entry of outsiders into the hostel room, refusal to show the identity cards, switching off the lights, sloganeering against the wardens, physical intimidation, verbal assault, preventing officials from delivering their duties etc," a UoH release said.

While three out of the ten students who were found guilty of grave charges were suspended for two years from academic programmes and hostel, seven students found guilty for indulging in related acts of stopping the wardens and security staff from discharging their duties have been suspended for six months from academic programmes and hostel, it said.

The committee also appreciated efforts of some boarders for their efforts in defusing the situation and they were issued the Letters of Appreciation, the release added.
