Tension prevailed for a while at the Government Hospital in nearby Pollachi today as relatives of a six-day-old baby staged a protest following reports of the infant gone missing from the ward, police said.
The matter came to light when one Jayanthi had gone to breastfeed her baby, kept in a phototherapy room, and found it missing.
She immediately alerted the relatives, who rushed to the main door of the hospital and indulged in picketing, they said.

The male baby was kept in the photo therapy room, for the last six days since it was reportedly underweight.
The CCTV footage of the camera in the room purportedly showed a woman carrying a baby out of the room.
As the woman was not seen going out of the hospital, a search was carried out on the premises.
However, the baby was later traced to a ward, where the woman was holding it after she had mistook the baby for her grand daughter born in the morning to one Nithya.
The female baby was also kept in the same room, police said.
By the time police reached the spot, the baby was restored to the mother, easing the tension after nearly an hour, they added.
