Tension continued to prevail at Mission road area here with one group seeking registration of criminal case against another group for allegedly damaging a portion of a religious shrine here, even as police has tightened security in the area.

The shrine was allegedly damaged by some miscreants with an earthmoving machine on the night of September 10, police said.

The protesters headed by S S Bawa, President Local Traders Union and L R Sodhi, General Secretary National Vyopar Mandal today took out a protest march here.

The district administration tried to pacify the agitators, who were seeking registration of FIR in the matter.

They alleged that the shrine was demolished by the management committee of Harkrishan Public School which controlled the affairs of shrine as it wanted to construct a shopping mall.

Last night, a former Punjab minister Sucha Singh Langah also held parleys with the warring groups to resolve the issue.

The local MLA Ashwani Sharma today appealed to people to stay calm.

Deputy Commissioner Sukhwinder Singh said a committee has been formed to enquire the matter within four days.

Police have deployed security personnel in strength to prevent any untoward incident around the Mission road area.
