An attempted suicide attack was foiled in the Pakistani capital and the alleged bomber and the mastermind were arrested, media reports said today.

The two suspects were planning to strike an imambargah or Shia prayer hall in Sector G-6 but security forces foiled the attack by arresting them last night.

The alleged bomber and the mastermind were identified as Muhammad Saeed Abdullah and Matiullah. Some reports said the mastermind was an Afghan national.

Police seized suicide vests and other equipment from the two men.

Cellular services were partly suspended in Islamabad today as part of special nationwide security measures for Muharram. Large contingents of security personnel were deployed in the capital.

Helicopters with snipers conducted surveillance and nearly 3,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed across Islamabad to guard Shia processions.
