A textile mill worker tried for the death of his wife and two kids in 2006 was today acquitted by a local court.
Shashikant Kadam, charged with abetting the suicide of his wife and subjecting her to cruelty, was let off by Thane Sessions Judge S J Kale for want of sufficient evidence.
According to the prosecution, the 38-year-old worker's wife Trupti strangled her two children, aged four and one, to death and then committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence on September 5, 2006.
The 35-year-old homemaker took the extreme step as she was allegedly unable to bear the torture meted out by her husband, it said.
The Judge, however, disbelieved the prosecution theory and accepted the arguments by defence counsel Baba Shaikh that Trupti was of unsound mind and she committed the gruesome act under that state.
The couple was residing with their son Avadut (4) and daughter Ridhi (1) in Sanpada area of Navi Mumbai.
