Thangzalam Haokip elected as Hill Areas Committee chairman

Former Deputy Speaker T Thangzalam Haokip has been elected unanimously as the chairman of the Hill Areas Committee (HAC) of the Manipur Legislative Assembly today, an official release said.

The HAC chairrman post went uncontested since Haokip was the lone candidate.

HAC member and BJP MLA V Hangkhalian presided over the meeting to elect the committee chairman.

Haokip was elected from Henglep constituency of Churachandpur district on a BJP ticket in the Manipur Assembly polls.

All 20 MLAs elected from the hill districts of the state are members of the HAC. Out of the 20 seats, BJP got five, Congress bagged nine, National People's Party (NPP) won two and Naga People's Front (NPF) got four seats.
 

Article 371(C) of the Constitution provides a special provision for the legislation and administration of the hill areas of Manipur in the form of a Hill Areas Committee, the release added.
