Thirty held for gambling

Thirty persons, most of them powerloom workers, were arrested today for alleged gambling and Rs.12.2 lakhs was seized from their possession at a village in the district, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Vazhapadi Deputy Superintendent of Police Kannan found the thirty persons playing cards for stakes at a house at Pethanaickenpalayam in the wee hours.

On seeing the police some of them entered into an altercation leading to an assault on one Armed Reserved Police constable, who was injured and had been hospitalised.

Police said they seized 11 two wheelers, a car, 35 mobile phones and playing cards, besides cash.
 

All the 30 persons were arrested under Tamil Nadu Gaming Act and relevant sections of IPC for assault on the police.
