Thousands of devotees took part in the chariot festival of Sri Kapaliswarar temple here, the main feature of the annual Panguni celebrations held today.

Devotees pulled the grandly decorated chariot of Kapaliswarar (Lord Siva), the presiding deity of the Sri Kapaliswarar temple through the 'mada' streets (streets around the temple) of Mylapore here.

Hymns from Tamil Saivite devotional compilations like Thevaram were sung by devotees amid chants of 'Namasivaya Vazhga (Hail Lord Siva).'

Another annual festival of the temple, 'Arupathu Moovar Vizha' will be held tomorrow in which the idols of sixty three Saivite saints will be taken out in a colourful procession.

Temple authorities have made elaborate arrangements for the annual Panguni festival that began with hoisting of temple flag on March 7.
