Thousands throng Vailankanni for Easter celebrations

Thousands of devotees from various parts of India thronged the famous Shrine Basilica at Vailankanni in this district today to celebrate Easter.

As a mark of celebrating the resurrection of Jesus, a candle procession commenced at 11 PM last night.

When the clock struck 12, resurrection of Jesus was announced and special prayers were held and will continue throughout the day.

Pilgrims from various parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra participated in the festival.

The special feature of theEastercelebrations is the 'padayatra' by hundreds of pilgrims from various places.

During the eight day period between Palm Sunday and EasterSunday, pilgrims carry big, wooden crosses on their shoulders, arrive at Vailankanni on foot and participate in the prayers.
 

TheEasterseason has brought brisk business to candle traders as all pilgrims visiting the church offer candles to the 'Lady of Good Health' as a mark of thanksgiving.

Easter celebrations were also held in other churches in the state.
