Three persons have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping and assault of a minor girl in Assam's Cachar district, the police said today.

The trio, who had allegedly kidnapped the girl from Pechachara village and later abandoned her in Kalain tea estate, was arrested late last night from Kalain.

The arrested have been identified as Nilu Das, Nandu Das and autodriver Ainul Haque and their interrogation is on.

The nine-year-old girl from Karimganj was visiting her grandfather in Pechacherra village, when two unidentified persons with their faces covered kidnapped her on April 21 and whisked her away in an auto-rickshaw.

The girl was taken to a house in Section 9 of Kalain tea estate and then abandoned in the tea garden outside the house.

Tea garden labourers returning from work found the girl crying and rushed her to a hospital from where she was later shifted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

The girls' family members and other residents of the village had alleged that the girl was raped but police and doctors of the hospital claimed that preliminary medico-legal tests on the girl found no symptoms of rape or any other sign that proved she was sexually assaulted.

The issue was also raised in the Parliament on April 22 by AGP MP Birendra Prasad Baishya.
