Three convicts escape from jail, superintended suspended

Three convicts escaped from the Alipore Correctional Home in the early hours today following which the jail superintendent and two guards were suspended.

"I have suspended the Jail superintendent Chiitaranjan Ghorai and an inquiry has been initiated. Two guards have also been suspended. We feel it was negligence of duty on their part. Let the inquiry report come out," Jail Minister Haider Aziz Safwi said.

ADG, Prison, Adhir Sharma said that Qutubuddin Laskar, Shamim Haldar and Azim Mistry escaped from Cell No 8 at around 3.30 AM by cutting the rods and scaling wall post No 7 by using water pipe and 'lungi'.
 

They escaped at around 3.30 AM, he said, adding a manhunt has been launched.

After the incident came to light, the minister went to Alipore Correctional Home to look into the security aspect.
