Three Customs personnel have been detained for questioning by CBI in connection with the missing of about 30 kg gold from a Customs strong room here.

"As per the present estimate, 30 kg of gold and foreign currency equivalent to about Rs 17 lakh were missing. We are still checking the accounts and the exact figure could be arrived at only after final verification," a CBI relese said.

In some cases, the gold and currency notes could have been handed over to the concerned person after he paid the duty due to the government. But some of the vital documents to cross examine the amount of gold stored in the strong room as well as the amount of gold handed over to the owners were missing, it said.

When the incident first came to light early last month, it was suspected that about 15 kg of gold, seized from smugglers, had gone missing.

Two Customs department officials were suspended last month after CBI arrested them in connection with the disappearance of gold.
